The uninterrupted horizon from the very south of Arran gives a true feeling of being on an island. You can also make out the Kintyre peninsula and other noteworthy landmarks from this area.
Blackwaterfoot is the centre of this region and hosts Arran's only 12-hole golf course, as well as other sporting facilities, not least the very famous 'Cairnhouse Riding Centre'. There is one hotel, ne Lodge, several B&B's and two pubs in the village, some shops and a post office. A short trip up the «String Road» through Shiskine, takes you to 'Balmichael Visitor and Craft Centre' – one of Arran's key attractions, home of the only driving range on the Island. Pony Trekking in Blackwaterfoot is also available and the swimming pool, gymnastic and snooker rooms at the hotel can be used by the public. In Shiskine are also several self catering establishments available.
Famous and often used walks include along the shore to the Kings Caves of Robert the Bruce's fame and to the Standing Stones of Machrie Moor.

Blackwaterfoot Lodge was built in 1899 as a Temperance Hotel by the Arran Bannatyne Family. It retains much of Victorian character in its large rooms and high ceilings. The Residents' Lounge provides a comfortable retreat with an open fire when the weather warrants it. All bedrooms are comfortably furnished, most have en-suite bathrooms; all have colour TV and tea/coffee making kit. There's also a real fire in the bar where cask-conditioned ale and a good selection of single malt whiskeys is available.
